Who is a Doula?
Doula is an experienced woman who accompanies another woman during pregnancy, birth and puerperium. She provides continuous support, information, emotional and physical support to pregnant women before, during and after birth.
At Salud Primal we know how important it is to accompany women expecting such a wonderful event to take place in their lives, an event marking the beginning of a new life and a new family.
Doula serves as a contemporary female figure of the one that we have lost over a long span of time. Her loving presence provides the expectant mother with protection and accompaniment at the very beginning of motherhood. At Salud Primal we believe that all women should have the possibility to be accompanied during childbirth and puerperium.
"Who are going to be my messangers to remind the world about the splendid majesty of motherhood, about its noble holiness at the dawn of Maternal Life?
Who will be helping me giving the woman its right place in life?
-Annie Bessant | India 1928-
Doula make all the phases of motherhood greatly easier to cope with.
Throughout the history women have been assisted and supported by other women during labor and birth. The word “doula” comes from Ancient Greek and means “to serve”. Other authors draw its origin to Hindi meaning “an experienced woman”.
During labor we acknowledge woman´s physical, emocional and spiritual aspects that help her face the unknown. Doula´s support is based on the knowledge that continuous emotional support and trust during labor improve and make all the phases of motherhood greatly easier to cope with.
Doula is also the person who accompanies and protects the woman so that her wishes would be respected, facilitating communication between her and the midwife and/or doctors. Once labor has started doula will be with the woman until the end. Doula does not make decisions for you, she simply accompanies you.
